Impact Reporting and Arts Reporting grants to open
The Alaska Center for Excellence in Journalism will open an application period for its two reporting initiatives on August 1, 2025. The Alaska Impact Reporting Initiative and Alaska Arts Reporting initiative grants will be accepting applications through Oct. 1. Nearly $50,000 will be available to reporters and news outlets in Alaska.
The Alaska Impact Reporting Initiative is looking for stories that increase public understanding of complex, underreported issues in Alaska. The total funding pool and maximum grant award are both $36,000, but the grant selection committee may choose to award more than one grant at lower amounts.
The Alaska Arts Reporting Initiative is looking for arts and cultures stories in Alaska that expand beyond current coverage. The grant pool amount for this arts reporting funding is $10,000. The maximum single grant amount is $10,000. We expect most awards to be around $5,000, subject to the discretion of the grant selection committee.
Applications will be submitted through the Alaska Community Foundation’s web portal.
Some recently published projects from the 2024 grant period include, “Gone to Pieces,” a collaboration between KYUK public radio in Bethel, ProPublica, and the Washington Post. Arts & Culture coverage includes “Visual Arts in Focus,” a series of stories published in the Anchorage Daily News by freelance writer and photographer duo Victoria Barber and Kerry Tasker.
