Grantee Spotlight - “Entre dos Mundos” - Supporting journalism in two languages
“Between Two Worlds,” a series in Sol de Medianoche, introduces readers of Alaska’s Spanish/English newspaper to Alaskans from Latin America. The project was awarded funds as part of the Alaska Center for Excellence in Journalism’s Fall 2025 Alaska Arts Reporting Initiative.
Grantee Spotlight: “After Halong” Northern Journal/Anchorage Press
The Northern Journal, now publishing as the Anchorage Press, was awarded an Impact Reporting grant for its ongoing series, “After Halong,” which follows survivors of the massive October 2025 storm that killed at least two Alaskans and caused a massive airlift evacuation from remote Alaskan communities. The collaboration among multiple funders is necessary due to the remoteness of the communities and the high cost of travel to report there.
DEADLINE EXTENDED: Apply now for 2027 Legislative Reporter Exchange
Applications are open for the Alaska Center for Excellence in Journalism’s Legislative Reporter Exchange. Reporters can learn the Capitol beat with a seasoned mentor, and provide on-the-ground Legislative coverage their audience wouldn’t otherwise receive. Students fill-in for those reporters, getting immersed in a hands-on newsroom experience, making professional connections and published stories all before graduation.
Grantee Spotlight: The Second Act
Senior Voice published a series, ‘Second Act,’ focused on Alaskans who found their artistic passions later in life. The project received a grant from the Alaska Center for Excellence in Journalism in Fall 2025.
Grantee Spotlight: Pressing Silence
Arts Reporting Initiative grantee Rachel Levy published an eight-part series in The Alaska Current featuring printmakers of Southeast Alaska. The final piece was published in June 2026.
